Question about Cyrus Trask’s introduction in East of Eden
I’m reading East of Eden for the first time and I’m a little confused about Cyrus Trask’s introduction.
Earlier, it seems like Cyrus imagines himself as a military expert and thinks he knows better than the generals. But later Steinbeck says that he actually developed an “excellent military mind,” that his articles influenced military decisions, and that he became an important figure in the G.A.R.
Am I supposed to understand that his military expertise eventually became genuine, or is Steinbeck still presenting this as part of Cyrus’s exaggerated/self-created image? #entertainment
