We Were Sold a Dream About Life Outside Africa

This might sound crazy, but the older I get, the more I realise we were sold a dream about life outside Africa.

Growing up, everything around us, media, stories, even people who had “made it”, made Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia seem like places where you arrive and life just works. Opportunities everywhere, stability, happiness, ease.

I came to the UK with that same dream. But actually living here has completely shifted my perspective.

Life is not easy. It’s expensive, isolating, and emotionally heavy. People are not warm, community feels rare, and most days it’s very fi nafsi, everyone for themselves. That’s so different from what I’ve known in Africa, especially Kenya and Somalia, where community, warmth, and human connection are part of everyday life.

I can only speak for those places because that’s what I represent. But from my experience, this “dream” we were sold doesn’t really exist. You survive, you adapt, but it doesn’t feel like the promised land.

Sometimes I wonder if we were made to believe we were lacking something, when in reality we were leaving behind things that mattered most.

Would love to hear if others who moved abroad feel the same way.
