Dante Alighieri is a case of writer being fundamental for creation of national identity. Is there any other writer with similar importance?
Usually everyone or at least most people know that Dante is the father of the Italian language, the "italian Shakespeare".
However he trascend this definition or at least feel reductive since he is also the father of italy by creating the modern italian identity. This may be a hyperbole, but it's a persistent idea among many people, summarized with the phrase "Italy was not created by a warlord but by a poet". Basically Italy without Dante would be a completely different place.
So i wonder if there is another writer with this kind of reputation? The only one who come to mind is the Iranian poet Ferdowsi, the writer of Shahnameh, who preserved the iranian identity and the persian language after the arab conquest.
