I just started reading “Lolita” and by god, it has pulled me in
Wow. I just started reading “Lolita” (I am about twenty-one pages in.) I must say that I am very, very glad that I checked this one out (I could not obtain a copy from my school’s library as I was told that the story is too controversial - I obtained my copy from the local library.) I have seen both of the film adaptations, and always wanted to read it - I am well aware that the subject matter is controversial, which is part of the reason as to why I wanted to check it out. I am disturbed, and yet impressed. You may have heard about “Lolita” before - without spoiling much of it, I will note that the narrator is a pedophile. However, in spite of how uncomfortable the subject matter is, I must say that I am finding the book to be impressive. If I didn’t have homework, I wouldn’t have put it down. The prose is just so, so very lovely. In fact, I’d even go so far as to suggest that of any book I’ve read, I think that this one is the most well written. You can really imagine everything that is taking place. The narrator is educated, and really does have quite a way with words. I am partly enjoying this one because it is certainly not overly simple, and I have already learned new vocabulary terms even though I am only twenty-one pages in. I intend to continue reading “The Testaments” alongside it, but I must say that this is certainly a page turner. I can only imagine how controversial it must have been at the time of its release. I will continue to talk about it on here - although I am not far into it, I will note that I do think it’s worth reading (if you can get yourself past the subject matter.) Just fascinating. The narrator seems to try and make the reader sympathize with him… so disgusting, yet so, soo well written.
