The BBC looks at an interesting issue: "Who are the Founding Fathers and Mothers of American culture?"
A recent "Front Row" episode on BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002nv9t tackled the question posed in the title, with a panel of academics looking at key figures who helped create, refine, and evolve American culture.
While the show does examine music and art, American literature – fiction, drama, and poetry – is center stage here. It's just 42 minutes long, so don't expect a huge amount of depth, but I found the whole thing quite fascinating.
I didn't know, for example, that theater was banned in the early days of the republic. And the podcast made me want to read Phillis Wheatley, considered to be first African-American author of a published book of poetry.
