Turkish authorities’ operation against LGBTQ+ groups has…

Turkish authorities’ operation against LGBTQ+ groups has widened to protests and journalism coverage, with Kaos GL board members and journalist Tuğba Tekerek among those affected. 🏳️‍🌈

The Guardian reported that raids began on 13 September at LGBTQ-rights and HIV-advocacy groups in five cities. Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the campaign, called “My Family is Safe,” was intended to protect children, families and social order.

Rights groups say the action targets LGBTQ advocacy and expression. The Guardian reported at least 150 detentions at an Istanbul protest and dozens more in Ankara; CPJ reported at least 126 protest detentions in Ankara and Istanbul in its earlier account.

CPJ said Tekerek was arrested pending trial on 15 September over an article written for Kaos GL two years earlier. It also reported arrests of seven Kaos GL board members and court-ordered blocks on the association’s websites. 📰

No trial date had been set for Tekerek as of 16 September. The scope of any formal charges against those detained in the broader operation remained unclear in the reporting.
