A federal judge has ruled that the Pentagon unlawfully retaliated against Anthropic after the AI company objected to proposed military uses of its Claude models. ⚖️ Judge Rita Lin permanently barred enforcement of the challenged restrictions.

The dispute began after Anthropic sought limits on mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The administration then ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic technology and labeled the company a supply-chain risk.

Lin found that the measures punished Anthropic for protected expression and also violated its due-process rights. The ruling does not require the government to buy Anthropic products or prevent it from choosing other AI suppliers. 🤖

The decision limits the use of procurement-related powers as a response to a contractor's policy position, while leaving the broader debate over military AI unresolved. The government was expected to fight the ruling, and a separate narrower case over another proposed rule remains pending.
