As rivers age, they can form meanders that sometimes become so pronounced that the river ‘strangles’, shortening its course and leaving the old stretch as a horseshoe lake, cut-off meander or oxbow.
In the Somali town of Luuq, the Juba River is on the verge of forming such a lake.
