Found a PS4 Pro in recycling room
I was down throwing electronics in the recycling room a week ago and found a PS4 Pro (CUH-7216B) and two remotes that someone had thrown away.
As I've been working in electronics shops and also worked with lots of hardware before I thought that I'd bring it home and check why it was thrown away.
A day later I started it up and it was working!
Previous owner hadn't logged out and had some games downloaded, so I started one of the games, Spider-Man, and the PS4 started sounding like a jet engine quite quickly.
That explains why it got thrown out.
I turned it off and opened it up.
It had a lot of dust in it which I cleaned out the further I got and eventually I got to the heatsink.
Oh man was it bad...
The dust layer that had been built up was around 2mm thick!
I could only see the amount of cooling fins equal to a small coin, if even that, on the fan side and I could peel away most in just a single stroke as it was so thick!
I spent about an hour cleaning it up properly and changed the thermal paste to MX-4.
Put it all together again and started it up.
Not a sound!
It was super quiet and I played some Spider-Man without ever noticing the fan.
Two days later I got hold of a Samsung 970 Evo 1TB SSD for 400 SEK (36USD) which I cloned the original HDD from, by using a docking station, and it worked flawless.
This meant that I could keep the games that the previous owner had downloaded, which mostly consisted of LEGO games, Spider-Man + Miles Morales, and some racing games.
I also got hands on these brand new for a total of 500SEK (45 USD):
Uncharted Triology The Nathan Drake Edition
Horizon Zero dawn Complete Edition - Playstation Hits
Horizon Forbidden West
God Of War - Playstation Hits
The Last Of Us Remastered - Playstation Hits
For a total of 900SEK or 81USD I got to say that I really scored something good here but I haven't connected it to network as the old account is still there and I don't want to loose the games from the previous owner until I've at least played through the Spider-Man games.
That might take a while though because my wife is playing Horizon all the time now..
But it means that I don't know if it's banned or such yet, but I don't believe so at least.
