Pennsylvania health officials reported a fourth measles-associated death as the state faces its largest outbreak in more than three decades. The death involved an 18-year-old resident of Mifflin County. 🏥
The Guardian reported that Pennsylvania had recorded nearly 700 cases and that all four U.S. measles-associated deaths reported in 2026 had occurred in the state.
Measles can cause pneumonia and neurological complications as well as its characteristic fever, cough and rash. It spreads through the air, including in rooms an infected person left up to two hours earlier. 🦠
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles, according to the CDC. Pennsylvania officials said they were working with partners to curb the outbreak and prevent further deaths.
