South Korea’s National Police Agency will review about…

South Korea’s National Police Agency will review about 310,000 missing-person cases closed over the past three years after allegations that an officer falsified records in cases involving people later found dead. 🚔

The review follows reports concerning cases on Jeju Island. Police said they will examine whether closed files were handled and documented properly.

The case has focused attention on how officers distinguish an adult who may have left voluntarily from a person facing immediate danger. The Guardian reported that more than 70,000 missing adults were reported in the previous year, with 99.7% of reports closed without a full-scale search. 📋

The review does not determine the outcome of individual cases or itself change the legal standard for police intervention. Its findings and any resulting policy changes have yet to be announced.
