Five men were arrested on suspicion of explosives and terrorism-related offences after suspicious vans were reported near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, police said. 🚓
Residents from 85 households in nearby Whelford were evacuated as army personnel, bomb-disposal specialists and counter-terrorism police investigated three vans. 🧨
RAF Fairford is a U.S.-operated airfield and USAFE’s bomber forward operating location. It has hosted recurring Bomber Task Force deployments and the Royal International Air Tattoo.
The evacuation showed how a security operation around the base can quickly affect neighbouring communities and road access. Authorities had not said when residents could return.
The men remain in custody while the investigation continues. Access to Whelford remained closed later on Sunday. ⚠️
