Why were dehumidifiers recalled for fire hazards? Are they safe to use now?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking into buying a dehumidifier (I live in Florida, so humidity is a big issue), but I recently came across information about past recalls due to fire hazards, and it honestly made me a bit concerned.

From what I’ve read, millions of units were recalled over the years because they could overheat, smoke, and even catch fire.

Some reports mentioned hundreds of fires and even a few deaths linked to older units.

I’m trying to understand a few things:

•What actually caused those issues? (bad wiring? compressor problems? manufacturing defects?)

•Were certain brands or manufacturers worse than others?

•Are modern dehumidifiers safer now, or is this still something to worry about?

•Do you feel comfortable running one overnight or when you’re not home?

I recently bought one from Amazon (used “like new”), but it arrived in questionable condition and now I’m debating whether I should even get another one at all.

Would really appreciate hearing your experiences or knowledge on this. Thanks!
