The day is based upon the life and struggles of Malala Yousafzai who advocates for equal access to education for women.
In October 2012, the Taliban attacked her for promoting women’s education in Pakistan and left her in critical condition. She was rushed to a UK hospital where she recovered.
After her recovery, Malala bravely continued her mission. On her 16th birthday, July 12, 2013, she delivered a moving speech at the UN in favor of women’s rights to education. She also founded the Malala Fund to help young girls access education. Malala Day is a time to remember Malala Yousafzai's story and to continue to support education for women, worldwide.
