Anyone else frustrated by the "Reverse Graphics Regression" on older hardware?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and it feels incredibly backward.
If you stay on the same hardware baseline for a few years, let’s say you’re running an RTX 30 series card, the visual quality of the games you play actually goes down as the years pass.
Hear me out. If I boot up a well-optimized game from 2020 (like Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, or Doom Eternal) at Native 1440p High settings, it looks absolutely breathtaking. Crisp textures, sharp lines, and incredible art direction.
But if I try to play a major release from 2026 on that exact same setup, the game is so demanding and unoptimized that I’m forced to drop the settings to Medium/Low and crank DLSS up to "Balanced/Performance" just to hit a stable 60 FPS.
The end result? The 2026 game running on aggressive upscaling and lower settings looks incredibly blurry, muddy, and objectively worse than the game from 5 or 6 years ago.
It feels like we've hit a point where modern engine features and a heavy reliance on upscaling as a crutch have ruined hardware longevity. Instead of games looking better as tech evolves, older hardware is forced into a blurry mess just to keep up with the baseline. #technology
