Under Xubuntu, WPS Office works correctly for classic editing of documents and spreadsheets, but WPS Spreadsheets (the equivalent of Excel) remains limited for XLSM files: it can open these files, but does not support VBA macros without a paid subscription, and even with it, compatibility remains partial.
1. Introduction
WPS Office is a cross-platform office suite (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) that offers a free alternative to Microsoft Office. Under Xubuntu, installation is possible via official Linux packages. Basic functions (text editing, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF) are well supported.
2. What is an XLSM file?
XLSM file: an Excel file containing VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros.
Macros allow you to automate repetitive tasks, create buttons, forms and mini-applications in Excel.
Example: automate the formatting of a table or generate reports in one click.
3. Problem with WPS Editor (Spreadsheets)
XLSM Compatibility: WPS Spreadsheets can open XLSM files, but VBA macros are not executed.
VBA Macros: WPS Office does not natively provide the VBA library on Linux. Enabling macros requires a premium subscription, but even then compatibility is limited and complex scripts don't work properly.
LibreOffice alternative: LibreOffice Calc can open XLSM files, but uses its own macro language (LO Basic), which also limits the execution of VBA macros.
