🔥 A study reported by The Guardian projects that, without better fire management, wildfires could burn 39% more of Europe by the end of the century even under its most optimistic climate scenario.
The study also found that improved management could mitigate the projected increase by more than 70%. The estimate concerns burned area across Europe, not a forecast of individual fires or their locations.
🌍 The European Environment Agency says climate change has already raised forest-fire risk across Europe. It expects fire-prone areas and fire seasons to expand in most regions, while droughts and heatwaves have brought fires to parts of central and northern Europe that were less commonly affected.
The agency says wildfire risk depends on weather, vegetation fuel, topography, land management and social conditions. Its recent work points to prevention and long-term risk reduction—including fuel management, fire breaks and more resilient forests—alongside emergency response.
