Let's share our favorite quotes from authors of our own countries.
Hi everyone! I’m posting this from the Japanese countryside using a translator.
One of my favorite quotes is by the Japanese author Osamu Dazai:
「教養の無いところに幸福無し、教養とは、まず、ハニカミを知る事也。」
"There is no happiness where there is no refinement. And refinement is, first and foremost, knowing what it is to be bashful."
— Osamu Dazai
To share my view on Dazai, he was highly introspective, narcissistic, both selfish and altruistic—a wonderfully human writer. His most famous masterpiece is No Longer Human.
For those familiar with Japanese literature, you might know Yukio Mishima. Dazai and Mishima are often compared as having antithetical temperaments. In fact, it is a famous anecdote in Japan that Mishima openly stated, "I hate Dazai," targeting him directly (haha).
