What is the closest that two distinct cone cell sensitivities can be?
In this hypothetical scenario, an animal evolved to sense many different shades of green to more easily be able to identify between different types of plants, similarly to how the humans ancestor evolved the L cone cell to more easily find fruit. In this hypothetical creature, how close could the cone cell wavelengths get? The difference between L and M is only \~40 nm, and I don’t see why they couldn’t have been closer if the fruits were closer to the M cone sensitivity, but how extreme could it get? Could the two cone cells only differ in a few nanometers, or would they be too close together and essentially fuse back into a single cone cell type? #animals
