It's odd that minivans are hated so much when they have many of the luxury features people go crazy about.
I was reading about the new Toyota Century SUV that has optional sliding doors which made me think, "what's the big deal? Minivans have had them for decades." When I see reviews of new cars that tout luxury features I become that meme of Leo DiCaprio pointing out that minivans have had those features for a long, long time:
* Panoramic roofs
* Rear seat entertainment
* Power doors
* Power tailgate
* Reclining second row seats
* Reclining third row seats
* Seats with ottomans
* Built in refrigerator
* Communication systems for the driver to rear seat passengers
* Observation cameras for rear set passengers
* And many, many more...
I'm not saying these things first appeared in minivans. I'm sure there's some obscure car from the 1950's that had them first. But minivans made them mainstream.
And I've heard all the arguments against minivans but most of them don't hold water for most people:
* The image - which is subjective, and why do you care what others think?
* It's too big - They're not that big and often smaller than SUVs. They just look big b/c they replaced the hood with passenger space, which I'd rather have. And they used to make small minivans but nobody bought them so they either dropped them (Mazda) or made them bigger (everyone else). And they're still shorter than any truck other than the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
* Towing - Most vehicles never do, and a lot of minivans can still tow >3K lbs.
* Going off road - Let's be real. 90% of vehicles never go off roading.
* Not fun to drive - This is probably the most legit one, but if there was a demand, companies would make them. I'd love to drive a Ford Supervan when dropping off my kids. Mercedes made the R63 (which was a minivan shaped station wagon that nobody bought). If Mazda made a Mazdaspeed Mazda 5 I'd probably be driving one today.
It's a bummer b/c my 2 favorite category of realistic cars (small city cars and minivans) are going the way of the Dodo.
If I won the lottery, instead of buying a RR or Maybach, I'd rather get one of those ultra luxe van conversions.
