Alex Eala politely declined to sign a Philippine flag when asked by a fan, saying, “Bawal sa flag,” as a sign of respect for the Philippines
An old video of Alex Eala from the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open in February has resurfaced following her historic WTA title victory in Washington, D.C.—and fans are admiring the Filipina tennis star all over again.
In the clip, a supporter asks Eala to sign a Philippine flag, but she politely declines with a smile, saying, “Bawal sa flag.” Under Republic Act No. 8491, writing or placing any markings on the national flag is prohibited. In one brief moment, Eala showed that her pride in representing the country goes beyond the court. Champion on the scoreboard, and just as admirable off it. | Alvin Kasiban
