Disinformation about Maui still running strong
I’m in *South Carolina* for work this week and my Uber driver couldn’t stop talking about space lasers and smart cities and regurgitating the same exact conspiracy theories about Maui. This wasn’t even the first time this trip a stranger had piped up about it when they learned I lived in Hawaii.
How was this disinformation campaign so widespread and effective? What can we possibly do about democracy at this point when such crazy stories are becoming near mainstream? I’m completely dismayed. Same thing happened when I lived in Seattle during the George Floyd protests. People from out of town were convinced that the city was completely destroyed despite my insistence that I lived in the neighborhood and it was still standing.
