I don’t have much trouble reading novels from the 1700s, 1800s, 1900-1950s and 1970s to now, but there is something about novels from the 1960s that make them more difficult for me. The tone is always a bit strange to me and something about the language feels either abstracted or so plain that I myself am abstracting it. I’m not sure if that makes sense but they always feel more cerebral. I both love it and hate it. Was this a trend in literature at the time? Basically what’s going on behind the scenes that I may be picking up on? Some examples of books from the time that I’ve experienced this feeling with are: The Man in the High Castle, The Crying of Lot 49, Shirley Jackson short stories collection, Stranger in a Strange Land, A Separate Peace, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, A Wizard of Earthsea, and Naked Lunch. #entertainment
