Franz Kafka - Metamorphosis. First book I've read in a while.
I never really liked reading books when I was growing up, I can count only a few books I've actually read, and even less that I've read by my own will. I haven't read a book in at least 5 years.
And lately I've been seeing a lot of quote of Franz Kafka, some people talking about his literature. Something just really captivated me about this author. So when I was in a library I randomly decided to find some of his books and read. And this is really unusual for me.
Okay, long story short, I started reading Metamorphosis. Although it's a very short story, I was reading it for like 2 weeks, because I rarely found the time and will to read it, mostly during my breaks between classes in college.
This story hooked me from the start and I was actually interested in reading it. I finished it today on my bus ride and was left with a lot of emotions. It's such a great and sad story. I also love the way it is written. I feel like all the details that I would be interested in the story were actually there. Something when I watch and read something, I see that the story details that at least I personally wanna know are not there. But this story had everything right. And if there is something I wouldn't want to know, it just wasn't there.
And now I sit here and think about all the events in the story and what can be learned from them, what's the meaning of all those events. I think about who to blame and can't put a blame on anyone. As if there should be someone or something that caused Gregor all the pain that he has gone through, but everything was justified. If I saw a human-sized cockroach in my relative's room, I would probably just run away and never come back there. But his family actually had decency to stay and care for him, be considerate towards a bug that can't talk. And they were under the impression that it's actually just a bug and not Gregor. They didn't know that he can understand them and had the mind of their son and brother inside. I think if they knew that he is still Gregor, the story could go completely different way. But to them he was just a bug and they still went along with living with him and hoping for Gregor to return. They can't be blamed for getting tired of him and becoming to hate his presence.
But at the end, the one who ended up on the short end of the stick is Gregor. He tried to hard to do the right thing, but everything he did was not interpreted correctly. Everyone was to assume that he is trying to hurt them, take something from them, scare them away. As if he all his actions were seen the opposite way. And every time that happened, he got hurt in some way and was pushed even further down his lonesome, depressing existence. He was neglected all the time, but he showed so much consideration towards everyone. And none of it was understood. His family probably thought that he was hiding from them out of fear or desire to not interact with them, instead of actually being afraid that they will get scared of his appearance.
And the one of the main questions and themes to me is how this story represents the relationships between people, how people change towards each other when their friend is facing a change, an obstacle, rough times. How would my family react if I was in a hard situation that I can't really control? What if I became a bug? What if I became so disgusting that you can't look at me? Would people at least try to hear me out? Would I be cared for? Would I care for someone like that and would I help and listen to them? How egoistic are all my relationships with others? So many questions that I wanna think about and discuss with other.
There is just so much that I want to say and I would not shut up for hours while discussing it. It's an amazing story to me, although maybe it's for my lack of literacy that I say that. So if anyone have anything to say or respond to me, please do so. I'll be glad to have a conversation. Thank you. #entertainment source
