A 24-year-old man accused of stealing three mud crabs worth about P1,000 remains in jail because he cannot afford the P25,000 bail set in his case, according to his lawyer.
The man was arrested Monday afternoon in Barangay Canaoalan after the owner of a fishpond allegedly caught him taking three mud crabs, locally known as alimango, from the property.
The fishpond owner said the crabs were worth about P1,000 and placed the suspect under citizens arrest before reporting the incident to barangay officials and the Binmaley police.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for a medical examination and was later placed in police custody.
He is now facing a theft charge, but his immediate problem is how to get out of jail.
Lawyer Marben M. Panlasiqui, who has been handling cases on a pro bono basis, has taken the man's case. Panlasiqui said the accused needs P25,000 for bail but is unable to raise the amount.
The lawyer's intervention has brought attention to the plight of the impoverished accused, who remains detained over an alleged theft involving three crabs valued at only a fraction of the bail amount.
The case also shows the difficulties faced by poor defendants who cannot immediately afford bail, even when the amount involved in the alleged offense is relatively small.
