Asian black bear caught on camera on Mount Takao in Tokyo
TOKYO -- An Asian black bear was captured on a wildlife observation camera walking on Mount Takao in the western Tokyo city of Hachioji on the night of Aug. 20, the municipal government announced Sept. 16.
According to the city, the bear was recorded at about 11:06 p.m. in a wooded area near Shiromidai, roughly 70 meters off Mount Takao's nature study trail No. 1 in the Takaomachi district. Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials confirmed information received Sept. 16 that "a bear was captured on an animal-observation camera" and provided the information to the city.
The footage showed one bear, believed to be an adult, walking. Trail No. 1 is a paved hiking route and is said to draw many hikers.
The municipal government classified the case as "alert level 1" under its Asian black bear response manual. It is asking people to refrain from entering the mountain area during dark hours, including early morning and after sunset. A city official also urged tourists to be careful, saying, "With the Silver Week holiday period approaching, the number of people visiting Mount Takao is expected to increase."
On the afternoon of Sept. 17, a woman in her 40s from the western Tokyo city of Ome who was resting with her dog at Shiromidai said, "The mountains are connected to Okutama and other areas, so it would not be surprising if bears showed up." An 81-year-old woman visiting from Fuchu, another city in western Tokyo, said, "Nuts that could serve as food for bears are falling along the hiking trail."
Toichiro Shimada, 86, of Shimada Shoten, a shop that has been in business for about 100 years near Kiyotaki Station on the cable car line, said, "I was born and raised here, but I've never heard of a bear showing up on Mount Takao."
His eldest daughter, Taeko, 58, said, "Some people use the hiking trails at night for trail running, and I'm worried they could encounter a bear. Recently, more customers have been buying bear bells."
