Does Willy Loman succeed in Death of a Salesman?
Spoilers for Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman, below. I had my heart broken by it yesterday and have been mulling it over since.
Earlier in the play, Linda tells her sons that the insurance inspector divulged to her that Willy's earlier crash appeared to be a suicide attempt. Having no idea that anyone is onto him, Willy later successfully ends his own life by crashing his car.
I want to believe his family received the money, although I personally feel we are meant to believe that poor deluded Willy failed to achieve his dream (of achieving respect and status through monetary means) even in death. At the same time, the conversation at the graveside recalls Willy in a more positive light, so it’s possibly alluding to his family’s attitude towards him having changed due to his ultimate sacrifice and success.
Additionally, I wonder if Willy could have been saved if his wife had only told him the insurance inspector was onto him! The tragedy of it breaks my heart (even though Willy isn't the kindest character ever penned to paper).
