BRASIL. New Tangled Series: PRESIDENTS OF BRASIL

Today: MICHEL TEMER

Michel Temer was born on September 23, 1940, in Tietê. He is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, and writer who served as the 37th President of Brazil from 2016 to 2018.

Temer graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo, where he later earned a doctorate and became a professor of constitutional law. Before entering the presidency, he built a long political career as a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB).

He served three times as President of the Chamber of Deputies, gaining influence within Brazil’s legislative branch. In 2010, Temer was elected Vice President alongside Dilma Rousseff. He assumed the presidency in 2016 after Rousseff was impeached.

During his presidency, Temer focused on economic reforms aimed at stabilizing Brazil’s economy, including a constitutional amendment to limit public spending. His administration, however, faced criticism and controversies, including low approval ratings and corruption allegations, which he denied.

After leaving office in 2018, Michel Temer stepped back from frontline politics but remained active as a legal scholar and public figure, occasionally participating in national debates and publishing works on constitutional law.
