Is my retail job taking advantage of me, or am I being dramatic for wanting to quit?
I’ve been working at a craft store for six months. The original store manager walked out during Christmas, and management has been a messy revolving door ever since. People are quitting left and right because schedules are completely fucked.
I’m currently juggling school and an EMT certification course. When I was hired, I explicitly agreed to part-time only (12–22 hours/week) and stated I absolutely cannot work Tuesdays or Thursdays.
Despite this, they keep scheduling me for 30+ hours a week. I’ve also told both the stand-in and the new SM that I have to leave at exactly 1:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays for class, yet they consistently schedule me 9–5 on those days and act shocked when I walk out at 1:30. My availability has always capped out at 5:00 PM for the entire week, but they just scheduled me 9–5 on the 4th of July and 11–7:30 PM on the 5th.
If this were a healthcare job in my actual field, I’d get it. Holidays and crazy hours come with the territory. But I’m losing my mind babysitting managers and sacrificing my education for a minimum-wage retail gig. Am I being ridiculous for wanting to quit over this? source
