The US Department of Energy authorized PJM Interconnection to direct backup generation as a last-resort measure during intense heat, before a level-three energy emergency alert. 🥵⚡
The authorization is a preparedness measure, not an announcement of rotating blackouts. PJM had also issued a maximum-generation emergency alert asking generators on planned outages how quickly they could return to service.
PJM operates the high-voltage grid and wholesale power markets for more than 67 million people across parts of 13 states and Washington, DC. It does not directly bill homes and businesses for electricity.
The heat also strained the separate Midcontinent Independent System Operator region, where forecast demand was about 121 GW, near its 127.1-GW record. MISO increased its reserve requirement as a buffer against outages and transmission congestion.
