🇻🇪 President Donald Trump said the United States has entered an agreement with Venezuela to take control of 65 billion barrels of the country’s oil reserves. The announcement did not include the agreement’s text or explain how control would work.
Trump said the deal was negotiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy RodrĂguez. Venezuela’s government did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.
The claimed volume is large, but reserves are not the same as production. EIA data put Venezuela’s proved crude reserves at about 303 billion barrels in 2023, while production was 742,000 barrels a day; much of the resource is extra-heavy crude that needs specialized handling and investment. 🛢️
The White House did not identify private-sector partners or provide commercial or legal terms. Those details will determine whether the announcement changes ownership, operating rights, exports or only outlines a prospective arrangement. ⚖️
