‘Beowulf’ translated by Seamus Heaney

I read _Beowulf_ translated by Seamus Heaney recently.

I’m at a loss for words, taken aback by the aching beauty of Heaney’s writing.

The overarching themes of cyclical violence, the inevitability of fate and Beowulf’s heroism and honour are so masterfully rendered by Heaney.

I can feel the verses linger in me, they pop up in my thoughts every now and then. I have a copy of _Beowulf_ by the side of my bed, and I flip through the pages every now and then because I’ll never grow weary of it.

It’s transcendental - just how words and their phonetics can be crafted in a union that feels so profound and starts inhabiting the inner reaches of your being. _Beowulf_ is ultimately a testament of my love for language and literature.

I recommend the Faber & Faber copy of _Beowulf_. It is prefaced by an excellent introductory essay by Heaney that sets the stage for the poetry thereafter.

I’ll be reading JRR Tolkien’s translation of _Beowulf_ soon along with his influential essay _Beowulf: The Monster and the Critics_.
