Why would the Hansa Teutonica redesign get canceled?

Hansa Teutonica is famous for two things:

1. Great and engaging gameplay
2. Boring art which turns people off the game

Because the art is fairly bland, many people find it hard to present to new players. (I personally don't mind the art after having played it. It fits the theme perfectly.)

The designer, Andreas Steding, had plans to redesign the game to a mobster theme, where players would fight over territory in Chicago. This seems to me to be a perfect redesign which could engage newer players. It would also have a two player mode and a solo mode.

But in May 2026, he posted on BGG, saying "The Hansa Teutonica Mobster redesign has been canceled. No one – at least no publisher – is interested in the game."

This is \*wild\* to me. A redesign of Hansa Teutonica basically sounds like a license to print money. It already has a built-in fan base. Many people who already own HT would buy it. It would also have a broader appeal to newer board gamers.

What could possibly be the reason no publisher wants to take this on? And why would Steding not try using something like Kickstarter?
