🗺️ The UN General Assembly was due to vote Friday on a Togo-sponsored resolution encouraging the world to move away from traditional Mercator maps, while France said it would abandon Mercator for maps better matched to their purpose.
Mercator was devised for navigation in 1569 and preserves local angles, but enlarges high-latitude landmasses. Africa is about 14 times Greenland’s area despite often appearing similar in size on Mercator world maps.
Supporters have promoted the 2018 Equal Earth projection because it preserves relative area. Its designers based its visual style on the Robinson projection while retaining proportional surface areas.
The resolution would be non-binding, so any changes to school materials, public documents or digital products would require follow-up by the institutions that publish and operate them. 🏛️
