AESC has paused a planned expansion of its Sunderland electric-vehicle battery gigafactory after talks to supply Jaguar Land Rover stalled. ⚡ The company has two production lines operating but has held off installing a third line expected to serve JLR.
The Sunderland plant sits beside Nissan’s car factory and currently supplies Nissan. The Guardian reported that lower-than-expected Nissan demand, alongside the absence of a JLR supply agreement, has slowed AESC’s ramp-up.
The delay matters because AESC’s new facility is designed for 15.8 GWh of annual capacity. The UK government backed the project with a £1 billion financing package in May 2025, projecting 1,000 jobs and output sufficient for up to 100,000 EVs a year.
JLR had considered AESC as a battery source while its affiliated Agratas factory in Somerset is built; that plant was scheduled to start production in 2027. 🔋 AESC’s longer-term additional lines for Nissan remain planned, but their timing and the outcome of supply discussions are uncertain.
