Skin and Soul Chapter 1: The Weight of Shadows To the rest…

Skin and Soul

Chapter 1: The Weight of Shadows

To the rest of the world, John was a completely ordinary man. He worked long, exhausting hours at a local machine shop, his hands constantly stained with grease and carbon, his shoulders carrying the quiet fatigue of a man just trying to get by. He lived alone in a small, weathered apartment at the edge of the city, where the streetlights hummed with a broken, yellow buzz.
But to Azazel, he was the center of the universe.
Azazel was not of this world. In the hierarchy of the Lower Realm, she was a terrifying force—a creature born of ash, obsidian, and ancient, destructive power. Her true form was magnificent and fearsome: eyes like molten gold, sharp curved horns sweeping back from her brow, and massive, feathered wings the color of a starless midnight.
Yet, for reasons even she couldn't fully comprehend, her fierce, immortal heart had chosen him.
Every single night, as the city grew quiet and John finally turned off his bedtime lamp, the shadows in the corner of his room would stretch and deepen. From the darkness, Azazel would materialize.
She walked with absolute silence, her heavy, clawed steps making no sound against the creaking wooden floorboards. Gently, with a grace that contradicted her lethal nature, she would sit on the edge of his mattress.
"You push yourself too hard," she would whisper, her voice a low, melodic rasp that carried only in the spirit realm.
John, deep in sleep, would merely stir, adjusting his blanket.
Azazel would lean in closer. Her obsidian fingers, capable of tearing through iron, would hover just millimeters above his forehead. Slowly, she would trace the lines of worry etched into his brow, channeling a cool, soothing energy to wash away his stress and coax him into deeper, peaceful dreams. She spent hours just watching the steady rise and fall of his chest, content to simply exist in his presence. To touch him with her bare, demonic skin would scorch his mortal soul, so she mastered the agony of keeping her distance.
But being his guardian required more than just watching him sleep. It meant keeping the world safe for him.
One night, as John slept peacefully, Azazel felt a sudden, foul spike of demonic energy in the alleyway just three floors below his window. Two lesser fiends, scavenging for human misery, had tracked John’s scent.
Before they could even approach the building’s entrance, Azazel stepped through the shadows and intercepted them in the dark, rain-slicked alley.
"He is mine," she hissed, her golden eyes flaring with a dangerous, lethal light as a blade of pure, dark fire manifested in her hand.
The fiends didn't even have time to scream. In a blur of midnight wings and burning steel, she silenced them, scattering their ashes into the wind. She wiped a drop of dark, cursed blood from her cheek, her breathing heavy, and looked up at John's dark window.
She loved him from the dark. She protected him from the monsters. But as she stood alone in the cold rain, watching the faint glow of the city lights, a deep, aching loneliness bloomed in her chest.
She didn't just want to protect him anymore. She wanted to know what it felt like to be looked at by him. She wanted to hear him speak to her, to hear her name on his lips, even if it was a false one.
The next day, Azazel decided she would finally step into his light.
