This here is one of my all time favourite rules in F1 for how daft and stupid it was. I vaguely remember in what I think was the 2014 Italian Grand Prix, where the broadcast decided to play a conversation between Rosberg and his engineer, with the engineer telling Rosberg how to set up the engine properly to take certain corners.
Martin Brundle I think it was at the time said that it was disappointing, as he wants the drivers to do all thinking for themselves. And thus the FIA stepped in to introduce a new rule going forwards. From now on, the teams will not be able to communicate to the drivers any information that can help them go faster.
Remember those minor and mostly insignificant radio chats we get where the engineers will tell the drivers how to approach certain corners? That was banned. From now on, it will be up to the drivers who decides how every race should be tackled. A wonderful idea in theory.
In practice, what it resulted in were drivers not being able to fix any problems with the car. This coversation came up a fair bit often with numerous drivers:
**Lewis:** Bono, help me out here man, my engine's going, I'm losing so much power on the straights.
**Bono:** Sorry Lewis, but the rules say we can't help you fix the engine.
**Lewis:** That's \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* man!
Needless to say, the rule was dropped after 2016, and nobody is begging for it to be reintroduced back into F1. #cars source
