What if the pattern is only the symptom? Yesterday I…

What if the pattern is only the symptom?

Yesterday I talked about how worrying can become a habit. Afterward, I was discussing it with a young man who realized he had been practicing worry for years without ever thinking of it that way.

It shook him a little.

Then he asked me a much harder question.

Why do I do it?

That question takes us deeper than the habit itself.

Most of the choices we make are influenced by beliefs we have collected throughout our lives. Some help us. Some limit us. But many of them have been with us so long that we stopped questioning whether they are even true.

That is where patterns begin.

You can spend years trying to change a behavior while never questioning the belief feeding it.

Take worrying.

Maybe somewhere along the way you learned that worrying means you care. Maybe you watched someone you respected worry about everything, so you learned to do the same. Maybe worry gives you the temporary feeling that you are somehow influencing an outcome you cannot influence.

The habit is what you see.

The belief underneath it is what keeps it alive.

This is where Awareness changes everything.

Today, when you catch yourself repeating a habit or pattern that is holding you back, do not immediately fight the behavior. Get curious about it.

Ask yourself what you would have to believe for that behavior to make sense.

Then question that belief truthfully.

Because sometimes the prison is not the habit.

It is the belief you never realized you were carrying.
