Women’s football in Africa is still growing, but the poor attendance and disappointing coverage at this year’s WAFCON have been difficult to ignore.
Many matches have had visibly empty stands, while fans across Africa and beyond have complained about how difficult it has been to watch the games. CAF’s official social media pages are filled with fans asking where and how they can watch the matches.
The tournament was originally scheduled for March but was postponed only weeks before it was due to begin. Since then, poot promotion, uncertainty surrounding broadcasting arrangements, and limited accessibility have made it difficult for the competition to build momentum.
It is unfair to look at this chaos and conclude that Africans simply do not care about women’s football. Interest can not grow if the tournament is poorly marketed, difficult to watch, and given limited exposure.
African women’s football deserves respect, investment, and proper organization. Not this mess.
WAFCON should be one of Africa’s biggest sporting events. Instead, the organisation and coverage have made it feel like an afterthought. #local
