I don’t know if it’s just the country that I live in. I assume that most service jobs are like this no matter the country.
I work as a barista and have worked in food service for a few years now, and either through my own experiences or through my coworkers at multiple different jobs…If someone asks for more hours, them getting them is framed as some sort of a reward? Cutting hours has literally been used as a punishment at some jobs that I was at. People wouldn’t perform as well, not be in as great of a mood and suddenly they’re not scheduled. Unless someone died they don’t care, even if someone did die, you have to move on quickly enough for their liking. You have to literally beg to be able to get enough hours to afford to live. source
