Overheard at a factory in Arizona, today, on the subject of automation over improving ergonomics and working conditions…
Chief weld engineer, (to EHS Head): “I didn’t mean to interrupt, earlier…”
EHS Chief, (a good old boy from the southern USA): “I was just bitchin’, I wasn’t doin’ nothin’. I got people talkin’ to me bout shoulder injuries, back injuries, all kinds’a injuries. I can’t have people comin’, tellin’ me they got a hurt shoulder reachin’ in to pull a part out of a machine… I could get all robots out here…”
Chief weld engineer, (apparently a degree holder in advanced industrial robotics, but also about to retire): “You could, and you should. A robot could cover two whole cells by itself.”
These guys seemed serious. I’m well aware of robotics and the advancement of automated technologies. I’ve been aware of it my whole life. What I find concerning is how blithely and cavalierly these guys were discussing this crap *on the shop floor,* right next to me, running an orbital welder. The attitude of so casually dismissing the idea of improving the conditions and equipment for human use in favor of bringing in robots is what I have a problem with. #technology source
