Charlie Chaplin, the most famous comedian in the history of cinema, said, “I have always believed that education is by example, not by theory.”
When I was young, I went with my father to see a circus show.
We stood in a long line to buy tickets, and ahead of us was a family of six children, their mother, and their father.
They were clearly poor; their clothes were old, but clean.
The children were overjoyed, talking excitedly about the circus, as if it were a long-awaited holiday.
When their turn came, the father went to the ticket window and asked about the price.
When the clerk told him, the man stammered and whispered to his wife, embarrassment etched on his face.
At that moment, I saw my father take twenty dollars out of his pocket and throw it on the ground. Then he bent down and picked it up, placing his hand on the man's shoulder and saying,
“You dropped your money.”
The man looked at my father, tears welling in his eyes, and said,
“Thank you, sir.”
The family entered the circus.
As for us, my father pulled me by the hand, and we stepped back from the line…
He had nothing but that twenty dollars he had given the man.
From that day on, I have been proud of my father.
That moment was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen… far more beautiful than the circus show I didn't get to see.
Education is an action seen… not words spoken.
