⚡ Nscale’s planned AI data centre in Loughton, Essex, may miss its 2027 target because the electricity grid cannot yet provide the required capacity. The Guardian reported that supply could be delayed until the early or mid-2030s.
The project was announced in 2025 and described by the UK government as the country’s largest sovereign AI data centre. Nscale says the London-proximate site is designed for high-density GPU deployments and could scale to 90 MW.
That proposed demand is comparable to the electricity consumption of about 315,000 homes, according to the Guardian. Nscale says it remains committed to the project and is considering onsite generation and ways to accelerate its connection. 🖥️
The delay reflects a broader infrastructure constraint: NESO’s March 2026 demand-connection review found that data centres were the largest category in its responses, accounting for 50,802 MW of demand. Grid-queue reforms prioritise ready projects, but NESO says new electricity lines and cables are still needed.
