Has anyone tried to use a gaming subscription without Xbox live or game pass before?

Like if you want to play a single player game that comes with a subscription with EA play or something

Are you able to just pay the $5 a month or whatever or do you still also need to at least for the minimum/standard tier of Xbox live as well?
