My German girlfriend wants to marry, but I prefer living together first. Is this not usual in Western Europe?
I’m from Turkey (25M) and my girlfriend is German (24F). We have been together for 2 years and we both currently live in Antalya. She says she wants to get married. I told her that I would prefer if she moved in with me first, and then maybe after 2–3 years we could get married if we decide to have a child, or if she accidentally gets pregnant.
I thought this was a pretty normal approach in Western Europe, but she didn’t like the idea at all.
Another thing is that she says she doesn’t really want to work, while I personally prefer a partner who also works.
Am I misunderstanding Western European relationship culture? Or could it be that she intends to use me financially?
Also, in Turkey the alimony obligation after divorce can be quite heavy for men and it continue indefinitely if the woman does not remarry.
