Today I learned: “Printed” price tags are often virtual, and can change on the fly
I was just at Hyvee and after noticing a couple items unpriced and a guy w/o a uniform but who seemed to know what he was doing, I asked if he worked there. He was a manager. He updated the shelf price on-the-fly and I saw what looked like a printed shelf label change before my eyes! Jaw-drop!
Maybe I’m getting old (I’m only 45) but I was like WTF and expressed that to the guy. He told me that during Covid, Amazon sold their Kindle-Print tech to almost all retailers (he said including Aldi) so they didn’t have to manually change shelf tags and could do it without touching anything.
He also confirmed they can change the price at any time from the back of house, including between pickup and checkout (though he said that’s against hyvee policy).
Who the hell knew “printed” tags were actually virtual? I didn’t until today!
