Epiphany - Saint Dimitrije
Epiphany is an ancient custom in which, with special rites and a feast, the Christian patron saint and giver is celebrated. Every Serb has one day in the year that he celebrates, and it is called a holy, holy and blessed day.
Slava is the holiday of the "small church", basic Christian cells, families, and every family, even the smallest, should celebrate Slava. As soon as the son separates into a separate household, especially when he gets married, he is obliged to glorify his saint, regardless of whether his father and mother glorify him in the old home.
It is a misconception that the father should "hand over" Slava to his son, or that the son begins to celebrate only after the father's death, as well as the custom that only the eldest son inherits Slava.
The son is obliged, as a sign of respect for his parents, to start such an important matter, such as founding a family and independently celebrating the name of Christ, with the knowledge and blessing of his father and mother.
Celebrating Glory, we commemorate the saint who is the protector of our family and our representative before the Lord. At the same time, we prayerfully remember all our ancestors who glorified that same saint and celebrated the Glory of that day. This is the essence and deep meaning of Serbian Slava.
Since Christians share both joy and sorrow with their neighbors, it is natural that Slava is also celebrated in the circle of family and friends. That's why more festive and varied dishes are prepared for Slava, the house is prepared and there is rule in the home
festive atmosphere. The Feast of the Epiphany should not be reduced only to a good lunch or dinner, an occasion to see friends and relatives, or excessive eating and drinking. That, then, is not Slava.
My baptismal glory is Saint Dimitrije
For the glory it is necessary to have the Slavonic stake, the Saint, the icon, sugared and cooked wheat.
The night before the glory, the stake will be cut. This is done by the oldest man in the family and a toast is made, followed by dinner.
Guests, friends and relatives come on the day of celebration. Such is the custom among us Serbs.
