As a board gamer, I’ve gone through two phases. At first, I bought almost every expansion for my favourite games. Over time, however, I realised that some of them actually made me play those games less, or even stop playing them altogether.
That got me thinking about what I really want from an expansion. Does a great expansion simply add more content (more of the same), introduce genuinely new possibilities, or improve weaknesses in the base game?
And if a game needs an expansion to be truly good, is that a sign of a great expansion, or evidence that the base game was incomplete in the first place?
Honestly, I still don’t have a good answer. I find myself changing my mind depending on the game and the expansion.
So I’m curious: what do you think separates a great expansion from a mediocre or unnecessary one? #games source
