I need to talk about The Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides
This book has left me mesmerized, bewildered, and pleasantly melancholy. I loved the writing. Rich symbolism, poetic storytelling, and an atmosphere that inspires deeper thought. At first, 249 pages for a 5 chapter book was a bit of a challenge. Retrospectively, I don’t think it could be paced any better. With the story being from the boys’ perspective, I found myself being captured by the mystique of the Lisbon sisters. This book quietly satirizes the male gaze, I felt as though Eugenides was deliberate whenever he tried to decipher the world around them.
The Virgin Suicides began with the ending, yet I still found myself surprised with how the all the events transpired.
What did you think of the book? I would love to hear some outside opinions, mostly since I don’t know anyone else IRL who has read this book. #entertainment
