Skin And Soul
Chapter 6: The Judgement of Light
A love born between the abyss and the earth is a quiet treason, but the heavens keep a ledger of all things.
Three months after the battle in the alley, the dark clouds of the underworld had ceased to follow them. Azazel, still wearing the gentle, unassuming flesh of Elena, lived quietly with John in his small apartment. For the first time in her immortal existence, she knew the warmth of a shared morning, the smell of fresh coffee, and the simple, sacred peace of resting her head against a human chest without fear.
But peace is an anomaly in the cosmic order.
It happened at twilight on a quiet Sunday. The air did not grow cold as it did when the demons came; instead, it grew blindingly, suffocatingly hot. A scent of ozone and crushed white roses filled the room. The ceiling of John’s apartment did not collapse, but the space seemed to warp, the walls dissolving into an endless, terrifying expanse of gold and white light.
From the luminescence, she descended.
She was an Archangel of the First Order, a terrifyingly beautiful entity clad in armor of polished silver that burned the eyes. Her six wings were not made of feathers, but of pure, crystalline light that hummed with a high-pitched, deafening frequency. Her face was beautiful, yet entirely devoid of mercy—a mask of absolute, unyielding law.
"Azazel," the angel’s voice vibrated through the very marrow of their bones, carrying the weight of a thousand brass horns. "You have defiled the boundary. A creature of the pit cannot dwell in the light of the living. And a mortal cannot harbor a soul of ash."
John immediately stepped in front of Elena, his grease-stained hands clenching into fists, shielding her with his own body just as he always had. "She hasn't hurt anyone!" John shouted, his voice cracking against the divine pressure. "She protected me! She chose to be good!"
"An abomination cannot choose righteousness," the angel declared, her golden eyes cold and unblinking. "And a mortal cannot rewrite the laws of the cosmos."
Before John could move, the angel raised her hand. A spear of pure, unadulterated white light materialized in her grasp.
Azazel, recognizing the lethal divinity of the weapon, tried to push John aside, intending to take the blow in her true form. But the angel was infinitesimally faster.
With a flash of silent, blinding speed, the spear of light lunged forward. It bypassed John’s shoulder by a fraction of an inch and plunged directly into Elena’s chest.
There was no blood, only a sickening, crackling sound as the divine light began to systematically unravel her mortal vessel from the inside out.
"Elena!" John screamed, a sound of raw, primal terror.
The angel withdrew the spear, her expression unchanging as Elena collapsed into John’s arms. The human flesh of Elena began to flicker, transiently shifting between her pale skin and her dark, midnight-indigo scales. The gold veins in her true form were turning grey, dimmed by the holy poison flooding her heart.
